Over the years, we have released four different Linkwood bottlings, each with its own character, cask influence, and story to tell. While some distilleries are known for producing bold, unmistakable spirit, Linkwood earns its reputation through elegance, balance, and versatility.
Founded in 1821 in the heart of Speyside, Linkwood has spent much of its history producing whisky destined for blends. As a result, many whisky drinkers know the name only in passing, if they know it at all.
That is a shame.
Because Linkwood has long been one of the quiet stars of Speyside.
What makes Linkwood different
The spirit is often floral and fruit-forward, with a soft texture that allows different cask types to shine without losing the character of the distillery itself. It is a whisky that rewards patience and attention. The more time you spend with it, the more it reveals.
That quality is rarer than it sounds. Many distillates have a strong house character that can overpower the cask, or no character at all and rely entirely on it. Linkwood sits in the middle in the best possible way. It has enough personality to be interesting on its own terms, and enough suppleness to take on whatever the oak has to offer.
Our current release
Our current Linkwood is a perfect example. This 12-year-old single malt was finished in a Ruby Port Barrique and bottled at 46.0% ABV.
The result is a whisky with remarkable depth and balance. Deep cherry wood in colour, it opens with luscious stone fruit on the nose before developing into a long, warming finish of dark chocolate and gentle sweetness. The port cask adds richness and complexity while allowing the underlying Speyside character to remain front and centre.
A great distillate should not disappear behind the cask. It should work in harmony with it.
Two casks. One distillery.
That balance is one of the reasons we continue to seek out Linkwood. And it is not limited to port.
In December, we released a 16-year-old Linkwood finished in a Palo Cortado sherry cask. Rich, complex, and layered, it sold out in less than 24 hours.
Two very different casks. Two very different whiskies. The same distillery character shining through both.
That is what makes Linkwood special. The spirit does not disappear when you put it in oak. It shows up differently depending on what you ask of it, but it always shows up.
A hidden gem worth knowing
Linkwood may never receive the same attention as some of Speyside's larger names. It will not appear on many best-of lists. It does not have the marketing budget of a major distillery group behind it.
But among independent bottlers and whisky enthusiasts who have spent time with it, Linkwood has quietly earned a reputation as one of Scotland's most dependable and underrated distilleries.
After four releases, we are inclined to agree. We do not anticipate stopping anytime soon.
